Advent 23

Father and Shepherd,

How tenderly and perfectly you guide us. To what kind and merciful ends you are directing our paths. You turn the wickedness of men into the grace of God. What we mean for evil you mean for good, and greater is its glory than that of all our noblest aspirations come to fruition.

Joseph had no company when his brothers were astounded at his life and mercy. Neither did anyone stay with you, Savior, when you were made known to your brothers. We deserted you in death and were scattered.

Yet your soul was restored. You walked, you fell, in the valley of death’s shadow. You were anointed by it in the presence of enemies. Goodness and mercy come in the wake of your cross, the path of righteousness. And now, like Joseph and Jacob but so much the greater, Father and Son reunite to establish a nation of shepherds. Let us love and serve like you. Humble us, Lamb of God, and raise us, great Shepherd. Come, Lord Jesus.
