Redeemer and Savior,
As with your ancient people, how miserably we set our sights. We are angry with the disruptions your deliverances cause. Like those who complained at Pharaoh’s reprisal to your ultimatum, we slide easily into the indignation of our three great oppressors: the world, the flesh, and the evil one.
But you say: “Now you shall see what I will do.” Take away our myopia which only believes possible what is in our hand to do. Give us faith to look to the work of your hands. Say to us again, “I am the Lord, and I will deliver you from slavery; I will redeem you with great acts of judgment.”
You did not come, O Christ, to bring peace in the world but a sword, nor to speak tenderly to sinful flesh but to bring to an end, nor to play nice with Satan but confound him entirely.
You have told us all that we ever did, yet promise we will worship in Spirit and truth. Only you tell us not to look to signs, but trust your word. Give us the strength to go and see your work. Let your word be enough for us. Nourish us with your food: the work your father has given you. Give us regard for the work of your hands. Let us not seek for bread in Egypt, but heavenly wheat, ripe for harvest. You have done all the work already. Hallelujah!
