Christmastide 11

Lord and Christ,

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God, who spoke in thunder and cloud and power from the peak of Zion. Your people who heard trembled, preferring the voice of men to your own. You have declared your holy law, and the consequences for its transgression: life for life. Yet we always prefer men to you: the gods they make and the things they possess.

Out of our pit of sin and death, out of the grave you call us. The voice of the Christ, your anointed, comes. There are, even among your enemies those who marvel at your love. By your word you compel us from the grave, and by the word of your prophecy you compel yourself down into it. Life for life awaited you there: restitution and retribution. The body of the lamb fallen in the pit belongs to him who was wronged: The Father. Yes, and you Father give his life as the ransom of many.

Upon your earthen alter the cross, you pour out your love for us. And all this you knew and braved when you took flesh upon yourself. Let those who despise you and are threatened by your rule and reign, preferring the things of man and this world to you, let these your enemies be ashamed. For though we despised you and repaid evil for your every good, you fasted, you prayed, you lamented at seeing us in the grave.

Hallelujah! The compassionate God is come.
