Epiphany 31

Lord and God,

High and holy are you, worthy of our firstfruits, the bread of all our toil. High and holy are you, justly demanding atonement for even our unintentional sins. High and holy are you, visiting vengeance on those who neglect your sabbath and ignore your commands. High and holy are you, striking down rebellion in the wilderness and defending your servants.

As corruption and dissection spread from Korah, as the bread of the Pharisees was poison, so today we are infected by seeing as man sees and not as you do. We judge according to appearances; we think in terms of flesh and blood; we despise our brother who rebukes us, but what is he? It is you we grumble against. Yet you have come to be killed outside the camp in our place. Help us to recognize you, to bear with you our cross and follow. Help us to recognize you, if in no one else, in the Lord Jesus Christ. For truly in him you have recognized us and heard our cries and answered.
