Lord and God,
Our despair is as a bottomless well, O God. It leads us to the darkest reaches; it takes from us our love of life. Why do you not pardon my transgression and take away my iniquity? For now I shall lie in the earth; you will seek me, but I shall not be. Many are the Jobs of this world. Varied are their guilt and pain.
How desperately we need the great hope of the risen Christ. How urgently do we have to learn not to offer our bodies to the void but to offer ourselves up to you. You desire no sacrifice, for in Christ there is the full and final offering. Let us be yours and not the graves’. Let those who are downcast find new life. Lift up the poor and needy. Give thought to the despairing. Raise us from sin and death to life imperishable. You are our help and deliverer; do not delay.
